Testing MLSN
I listened to Joe Gulotti’s Talking Greenkeeper podcast with guest Daniel Palin about an MLSN trial on 9 holes, and a different method on the other 9 holes. You can listen to the show for the full story.

Nutrient harvest turf math
A correspondent wrote with this inquiry related to estimating the value “a” in the MLSN fertilizer rate equation.1 Specifically, the “a” value is the expected plant use of the element over the time period for which the fertilizer recommendation is being made.

New OM246 video script
I prepared a new video about OM246. This video premiered at the Ontario Turfgrass Symposium last week, and it’s now available for worldwide viewing. I wasn’t able to get to Ontario for this event, but I was glad to have the opportunity to explain why OM246 testing is done, how it works, and what one can do with the results.

Turfgrass growth ratio, nitrogen harvest, and fertilizer adjustment
Is there a way to estimate how much nitrogen is harvested in clippings? Is there an equation to use to adjust a nitrogen fertilizer rate based on the turfgrass growth ratio?

'Greenkeepers know, the world over, that if the grass grows too slow, they will be out of a job'
I was a guest on The Tie podcast where I spoke with Walker Simas about “Turf for Dummies.” Well, not quite to that extreme. We still managed to cover a lot of greenkeeping topics, but perhaps I explained the topics in a less technical way.

Measuring effective cutting height with a laser
I think we’ve all seen the prism gauges that can be used to check the effective height of cut. Well, they sort of can be used for that, but there’s a catch.

The annual top post reshuffle
There are hundreds of posts on the ATC website. Topics range from the 2 green system, aeration, and algae to winter, writing, and zoysia. Some posts get a lot more views than others, and about once a year I update this list of top posts.

Annual sand topdressing amounts
Almost every turfgrass manager knows the current mowing height. Most turfgrass managers know the annual nitrogen (N) fertilizer rate. When it comes to sand topdressing rates, some turfgrass managers have that number.

Daylength, temperature, and Zoysia flowers
Zoysia grasses are grown all over the world. I’ve seen them as far away from the equator as Oregon and Yorkshire. I’ve also seen them growing near the equator. The temperatures and the daylengths vary quite a bit between the equator and those locations far from the equator.

I was surprised to read this about nitrogen, coring, and sand topdressing
I bought a new book last year in January and got my hands on it in December. It’s the Compendium of Turfgrass Diseases, Fourth Edition, published by APS Press in 2023.
