Tournament golf on zoysia greens
The 50th KBC Augusta golf tournament will be held at Keya Golf Club in Fukuoka next week. This is an especially interesting golf tournament because of the grass types used—korai (Zoysia matrella) on greens, fairways, and tees, with noshiba (Zoysia japonica) in the rough.

Soil VWC estimate by a soil water balance
How would I think of soil water content if I did not have a soil moisture meter? I’d think of it in volumetric water content, the same as if I did have a soil moisture meter.

Hourly evapotranspiration, soil water content, and crop coefficients
On June 9, 2023, I was at Keya Golf Club in Fukuoka, Japan. The final round of the Landic Challenge 10 tournament was played that day. A morning view down the 10th hole at Keya Golf Club prior to the final round of the Landic Challenge 10 tournament.

Sand topdressing measurement by exact methods
There are a lot of reasons to apply just the right amount of sand topdressing. Too much is no good, and too little is a problem too. The starting point with figuring out the right amount of sand to apply to your turfgrass is to know exactly how much you’ve been applying.

More observations about course maintenance in Japan

Four numbers about golf course maintenance in Japan
From July 3 to July 10, I visited 11 golf facilities in Japan. I asked some basic questions to the greenkeeper at each course. The answers to the questions help me to understand what the greenkeeper is working with, and how many resources are available to get the job done.

Coring three times a year is recommended when ...
When a lot of nitrogen is applied relative to plant demand, I guess. The article Creeping bentgrass surface properties following aerification by Hubbard et al. reports the results of an experiment looking at various aerification treatments, tine diameters, and tine spacings on a `Crenshaw’ creeping bentgrass green at Clemson, South Carolina.

Shade effect of clouds
I was in Tokyo on June 14. When I looked out the hotel window just after sunrise, it was cloudy. When I walked to a harborside restaurant for a working lunch, it was noticeably cloudy.

All about OM246
The key thing about OM246 testing for total organic material is that the sample is handled and measured to explicitly include all the living and dead undecomposed plant material in the sample.

"Successfully complicating something that distracts us from the real challenges we should be addressing on golf courses"
Frank Rossi and Chris Tritabaugh had a short conversation about the fascinating Park Grass experiment, and about a lot more than that—fertilizer, bentgrass, dogma, salaries, budgets, detail work, GPS sprayers, and so on.
