I had an open discussion today with a group of greenkeepers in Japan. We talked about a lot of things – bentgrass in summer, irrigation, fertilizer, organic matter management, roots, etc.

When Andrew McDaniel wrote about #MLSN greens, I thought it may be interesting to show a few details of what this is about: These #MLSN greens are about to take 34 mows/21 rolls in 2 weeks.

I don’t often write about this, because I assume everyone knows it. But I’ve read a few things recently about amazing sums of money being saved by changing the way of fertilizing, all while getting the same or better turf conditions.

There’s a new spreadsheet available from PACE Turf that uses the temperature-based growth potential to estimate the quantity of sand required as topdressing. They wrote: “To get a rough idea of how much sand to apply over the course of the year, we have developed a simple spreadsheet that uses growth potential (GP) as a guide, and a maximum sand application of 150 lbs dry sand/1000 ft2 per month at maximum turf growth.

The KBC Augusta tournament is next week (August 24 to 27) on the Japan Golf Tour. There are a lot of reasons why it is a lot more than an average tournament.

I’ll be making my second trip to Harrogate next month, and this time I get to lead some discussions about turfgrass management. The seminar schedule and booking form is here. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time, and I’m really excited about this opportunity to share, in person, many of the ideas I’ve been working on recently.

Allan Dewald posted a poll on Twitter, asking how many other superintendents on Twitter are using the MLSN guidelines. The results of the poll, with 93 votes, were 41% using MLSN, 38% using conventional guidelines, and 21% not soil testing.

The KBC Augusta tournament is coming up next week at Keya Golf Club in Fukuoka. The volume of grass clippings cut from the greens is measured every morning. I think it is interesting to look at the density of the measurements.

This is an interesting poll by David Phipps. He wants to know what is the preferred social media platform for work. As I look at the poll on Twitter, as it stands now, Twitter is the winner in a landslide at 91%.

When I received the question about tissue testing, I replied that I would write a more detailed explanation later on the blog. I’ve tried to do this here without resorting to numbers or charts.
