Sand topdressing to match grass growth
There’s a new spreadsheet available from PACE Turf that uses the temperature-based growth potential to estimate the quantity of sand required as topdressing. They wrote: “To get a rough idea of how much sand to apply over the course of the year, we have developed a simple spreadsheet that uses growth potential (GP) as a guide, and a maximum sand application of 150 lbs dry sand/1000 ft2 per month at maximum turf growth.

I just bought a plane ticket to Manchester
I’ll be making my second trip to Harrogate next month, and this time I get to lead some discussions about turfgrass management. The seminar schedule and booking form is here. I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time, and I’m really excited about this opportunity to share, in person, many of the ideas I’ve been working on recently.

The KBC Augusta tournament is coming up next week at Keya Golf Club in Fukuoka. The volume of grass clippings cut from the greens is measured every morning. I think it is interesting to look at the density of the measurements.

Turfgrass industry social network use for work
This is an interesting poll by David Phipps. He wants to know what is the preferred social media platform for work. As I look at the poll on Twitter, as it stands now, Twitter is the winner in a landslide at 91%.

Tissue testing for turfgrass
When I received the question about tissue testing, I replied that I would write a more detailed explanation later on the blog. I’ve tried to do this here without resorting to numbers or charts.

Tissue testing: sometimes my own words come back to haunt me
Yesterday I wrote of tissue testing (or more specifically, leaf nutrient analysis) that “I don’t like making nutrient application decisions” based on it and “I would not do routine tissue testing if I were a golf course superintendent.

Tissue testing: aiming at the wrong target
This question arrived by e-mail: “I have a couple questions – A colleague and I in this area have been reducing N usage and tracking clipping yields for almost 2 years.

Have you seen turf that ran out of potassium?
It’s not pretty. In fact, the grass gets horrendous in a hurry when it runs out of potassium (K). Which is why, as a turfgrass manager, one wants to make sure the grass is always supplied with enough K.
