In the Global Soil Survey (GSS), we looked at the soil nutrient levels in soil that was specially selected as being from areas where the grass is growing well. The first year of GSS data are available here.

I’ve been asked this question more times than I can remember. It usually goes something like this. We had the soil tested, and it turns out we are quite low in P (or K or Ca or Mg).

This is no secret among turfgrass scientists—there isn’t a lot of good justification to support what we call conventional guidelines for soil nutrients in turfgrass. And by that, I mean the conventional guidelines are broken.

These photos from an abandoned golf course in the southern part of the Tohoku region of Japan are fascinating. They show clearly how three different species perform when they are not maintained for 18 months in that climate.

The KBC Augusta tournament is notable for being a rare professional golf event played entirely on zoysia surfaces. At host Keya Golf Club, the tees, fairways, and greens are korai (Zoysia matrella), and the roughs are noshiba (Zoysia japonica).

When it comes to fertilizer, it makes sense to me to apply nutrients to the turf as they are required. This is based on the growth potential approach developed by PACE Turf, and is very similar to the demand driven fertilization described by STERF.
