When the soil doesn’t have much phosphorus, establishing grass almost always responds to the application of P fertilizer. When the soil doesn’t have much phosphorus, established grass often performs perfectly fine without the addition of any P fertilizer.

These pots of variegated tropical carpetgrass (Axonopus compressus) received an application of granular 16-16-16 fertilizer twelve days before this photo was taken. The grass on the right responded with a lot more growth than did the grass at left.

It’s been cloudy, and raining, and I wasn’t in a rush to cut the grass. I decided to skip mowing for exactly 4 weeks to demonstrate the difference in growth habit that I wish everyone paid attention to.
