In July 2015 I led a seminar entitled “A discussion mostly about the principles of turfgrass nutrition, with a focus on soil nutrient analyses and their use in modern turf management.

In a seminar at the Korean GIS with the title “A Modern Method for Determining Turfgrass Nutrient Requirements,” I explained how one can determine turfgrass nutrient requirements by estimating turf nutrient use and comparing that to the amount of the nutrient in the soil.

The recorded webinar “MLSN Guidelines: what they are, and how to use them” is available for viewing in the TurfNet webinar archives. There were some questions about how to convert the results from other testing methods to an equivalent value by the Mehlich 3 extraction method.

After a talk at a seminar about estimating nutrient use, there were a couple questions that I answered quickly. I take the opportunity to elaborate on my answers here. 1. When looking at soil test results, how to consider the availability of nutrients?

I spoke at an event in Korea organized by Golf Seminar magazine for golf course superintendents, CEOs, and general managers. I spoke about 10 numbers for putting green maintenance.1 At almost every golf course, the mowing height is known.

Just before typhoon #15, I traveled to Okinawa to deliver a lecture about Turfgrass in the Ryukyu Islands at Ocean Expo Park. And despite the approaching typhoon – now passing Okinawa with winds over 130 miles per hour and with waves 50 feet high – there were 101 people in attendance in a packed room to hear about the turfgrasses of these islands, what makes this such a challenging place to produce good turfgrass (low photosynthetic irradiance), and the four steps that one can implement to optimize turfgrass performance under these conditions.
