Estimated nitrogen mineralization from soil organic matter
This topic—carbon in turfgrass soils—was the subject of a Frankly Speaking podcast episode. One of the topics host Frank Rossi spoke about with guests Drs. Claire Phillips and Alec Kowalewski was the nitrogen mineralized from soil organic matter.

One reason why I recommend annual soil testing of sand rootzones
I recommend annual soil testing of professionally-managed turfgrass grown on sand rootzones. For turf growing in soil, I don’t mind testing every two or three years. But sand rootzones usually aren’t very well buffered and important soil properties can change rapidly.

P fertilizer recommendations as a 2x to 18x multiple of MLSN
After I wrote this post about the differences in P fertilizer recommendations when using different methods for soil test interpretation, I heard from some readers that it seemed I was taking something simple—MLSN—and making it seem complicated.

Reminder to air dry soil samples
I air dry soil samples before sending them to a lab for analysis. The effect of this drying is to stop soil microbial activity and to stop ion exchange reactions. Allowing the samples to air dry also reduces the mass of the sample prior to shipping.

Normal manganese (Mn) levels in soil and turfgrass leaf tissue
I wrote an update about normal manganese (Mn) levels in soil and in turfgrass leaves. Mark Smith posted about Mn with some extraordinarily verdant grass and attributed the color to Mn.

Sodium and potassium as percentages or concentrations
I received an interesting question about some soil test results. Hey Micah, I’m just looking at the soil test results again … is there anything to worry about regarding sodium (Na) being higher than potassium (K)?

My preferred method of OM246 sample collection
I’ve collected a lot of soil samples for total organic matter testing by depth. That’s what I call OM246 testing. My preferred method for this is to use a straight (no taper at the tip) cylinder to pull the core.

MLSN and correcting soil "deficiencies"
Dried, ground, and sieved soil samples on a laboratory bench ready for scooping and further extraction and testing. A correspondent wrote with an inquiry about MLSN. The question I was listening to your podcast regarding the MLSN nutrition method as I’ve begun using it at my golf course in […].

A crash course in OM246 total organic matter testing
I put together a couple videos that discuss total organic material testing. First, this one, which shows some samples I’ve collected. From my office, to the post office, I discuss what is going to happen with them at the laboratory.

Results of the soil sampling procedures survey
Thanks to everyone who completed the soil sampling procedures survey. These are the results from the 79 responses, and I include some commentary about how I would do it. 1. Do you take a composite sample?
