If you want to do a 3 million dollar irrigation system, you don’t call me
As a follow-up to part 1 of this extraordinary interview with Don Mahaffey on Golf Club Atlas, here’s part 2. Don knows the golf and grass-growing business from the ground up, and he knows what he is talking about.

Hitting all of our goals
This is an extraordinarily good video about grasses, mowing, construction, irrigation, soils, playability, maintenance cost, and more. If you are interested in these topics, watch this interview with Don Mahaffey.

3 fine football fields
On the eve of the 2014 World Cup, I had three quick things to share about football/soccer. Kashima Soccer Stadium, March 2014 I’d been to two matches at the Kashima Soccer Stadium (this was a venue for World Cup games in 2002) in the past year, one at the end of summer, and one at the beginning of spring.

Inventions, Education, and Fun at Japan Turf Show 2013
The Japan Turf Show is one of my favorite events of the year. In fact, I like the show so much that I wrote a remote report for the 2012 show that I could not attend.

3 reasons sheep are better than cows for mowing fairways
The 1st at Ootacamund Gymkhana Club (founded 1896) is strikingly reminiscent of the 10th at Augusta National. This long dogleg left plays steeply downhill in a wide corridor between tall evergreen trees.

A Remote Report From the Japan Turf Show
The Japan Turf Show is one of my favorite industry events, but I wasn’t able to attend this year. Fortunately, some friends did attend, and I got updates about the show at Osaka’s Banpaku Koen, which appears to have gone off very well.

Are Zoysia Fairways “Sticky”?
I've heard various objections made against the use of manilagrass (Zoysia matrella) on golf courses, one of those objections being that the grass is "sticky", that it grabs the ball or the club.

How Much Calcium Does Turfgrass Require?
Even in soils that contain relatively low amounts of plant-available calcium, that is still enough to supply all the calcium the grass requires. Why is that? Turfgrass uses relatively small amounts of calcium, somewhere in the range of 1.

Sunshine, zoysia, and grass performance in Asia
There are four grasses in the image above (click on it to get a larger view). We are looking at Tifeagle and Novotek (both are Cynodon hybrids), Sea Isle Supreme (Paspalum vaginatum), and a fine-bladed zoysia, probably Zoysia pacifica.

Potassium for turfgrass: interview with Dr. Larry Stowell of PACE Turf
Dr. Larry Stowell and I recorded this video interview (back in 2012!) about potassium fertilizer for turfgrass. How much potassium is enough? How should you decide how much potassium to apply to meet the plant requirements, without wasting money by applying too much?
